UBM · Universal Base Module

One base. Your measurement.

UBM is our universal data-gathering IoT platform: one main board with a controller, motion and environmental sensors and galvanically isolated I/O. In a quick redesign sprint built around your needs, we turn it into a totally new product of your own, with no development cost, and software as a service turns its data into information. JALIO silo monitoring is a sample application.

The base board

Everything on one board.

Inputs, outputs and sensor buses are galvanically isolated from the controller, so field wiring, long cables and noisy supplies stay away from the logic.

We design the board in KiCad and write its firmware ourselves. The current main board is revision 2.4.1.

01

Controller and connectivity

ESP32-S3 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE. A 4G/5G IoT add-in card (LTE-M and NB-IoT) adds the mobile network and GNSS positioning where there is no Wi-Fi.

02

On-board sensors

3D gyroscope and 3D accelerometer, barometric pressure and temperature, for movement, tilt and the conditions inside the enclosure.

03

Isolated industrial I/O

Galvanically isolated digital inputs for 24 V signals, digital outputs, and 0–10 V analog inputs for standard industrial sensors and transmitters.

04

Sensor buses

An isolated I²C bus for sensors on the board, and a second, separately isolated I²C bus that carries power and data to remote sensor boards over a cable.

Applications

One base, many devices.

JALIO is the complete sample application. The others are designed on the same base board.

01 · sample

Silo monitoring

Temperature and relative humidity in grain and feed silos, turned into moisture risk and alerts. Shown in the JALIO sample application.

02

Electricity quality meter

Voltage, current and power quality on three-phase supplies, measured through an isolated metering board.

03

Air quality meter

Volatile organic compounds, temperature and humidity, measured on a remote sensor board connected over the isolated sensor bus.

04

Your product, licensed

A quick redesign sprint turns UBM into a totally new product of your own. Jalacons does the redesign without development cost and takes a fee per unit manufactured.

Application ideas

What else could UBM do?

These are concepts, not products on sale. Each one uses inputs and outputs the UBM board already has, and a redesign sprint can turn any of them into your own product.

01 · idea

Spot-price load control

Water heaters, underfloor heating or an EV charger switched to the cheapest hours of the electricity spot price, through the digital outputs and contactors. The metering board shows the power drawn.

02 · idea

Summer cottage remote

Heating, frost protection, the water pump and the sauna, controlled over the mobile network with no Wi-Fi at the cottage, and alerts for power cuts and falling temperatures. A remote sauna start comes with safeguards against heating with something left on the heater.

03 · idea

Grain dryer monitoring

Drying air and grain temperatures through the 0–10 V analog inputs, burner status and fault signals through the isolated digital inputs, with alerts to your phone. A natural partner to JALIO.

04 · idea

Machine tracking

Location, running hours and movement of tractors, forest machines or trailers, from GNSS positioning, the accelerometer and an ignition signal on a digital input.

Sample application

JALIO: a complete UBM sample.

JALIO is the sample application of UBM. It shows what a complete UBM application includes: data measured in the silo, turned into information on your phone.

Device
UBM main board with the 4G/5G IoT add-in, designed for grain and feed silos.
Measurement
Temperature and relative humidity, with several devices per silo for location-specific readings.
Connection
Real-time readings over the mobile network, or Wi-Fi where it reaches.
Data service
Readings checked against crop-specific moisture limits on a server in Finland, with alerts.
Applications
Web dashboard, Android app and PDF reports, in English, Finnish, Swedish and German.
Terms
Device and service for one monthly fee.

Redesign sprints

A totally new product, sprint by sprint.

Our core idea: quick redesign sprints built around one customer, each turning UBM into a totally new product. Jalacons does the redesign without charging development cost, and earns a fee for each unit manufactured once your product is on the market. You start from the base board JALIO is built on, not from a blank schematic.

  1. 01

    Define

You tell us what your product should measure, where, how often, and what it should report.

  2. 02

    Redesign sprint

In a quick sprint built around your needs, Jalacons redesigns the UBM board and firmware into your new product. There is no development cost.

  3. 03

    Test

You pay for the testing phase of your product, such as EMC testing.

  4. 04

    Offer

Our manufacturing partner makes you an offer for the complete product.

  5. 05

    Sell

Sales start, with you as the product manufacturer. Jalacons takes a fee for each unit manufactured.

FAQ

Questions about UBM

What does UBM stand for?
Universal Base Module. It is the common base board that Jalacons measuring devices are built on.
What is a redesign sprint?
A quick, focused design round built around one customer’s needs. Starting from the existing UBM board instead of a blank schematic, Jalacons redesigns the hardware and firmware into a totally new product.
How does a UBM licence work?
UBM becomes the base platform of your own product. Jalacons redesigns it for you in a sprint, you pay for the testing phase, our manufacturing partner makes an offer for the complete product, and you bring it to market as its manufacturer.
What does a UBM licence cost?
There is no development fee. You pay for the testing phase, such as EMC testing, and Jalacons takes a fee for each unit manufactured once sales start.
How does JALIO relate to UBM?
JALIO is the sample application of UBM: UBM devices for the silo, a data service that turns their readings into information, and web and Android apps.
Does a UBM device need Wi-Fi?
No. With the 4G/5G IoT add-in card it sends readings over LTE-M or NB-IoT mobile networks, and the same card provides GNSS positioning. Where Wi-Fi reaches, the controller can use it directly.
What can be connected to it?
Industrial signals through the isolated digital inputs, digital outputs and 0–10 V analog inputs, and digital sensors over the isolated I²C buses, including remote sensor boards on a cable.
Who designs the board and writes the firmware?
Jalacons. The same people design the board and write the firmware, so the hardware and the code are made for each other.
